Montaigne Weekend in Review

by: Alexandra RosenbergWelcome by President Lindsay

This weekend was Valentine's Day, but more importantly to those hoping to win a scholarship, it was the Fourth Annual Montaigne Scholarship Weekend. Forty prospective students were welcomed from all over the United States to compete for two full-tuition and two half-tuition Montaigne Scholarship.s Was the competition intense? Of course. Was it fun? Absolutely. Will four people come out of it with a major scholarship to Shimer College? Yes!

All the prospective students had to do, other then find their way to Chicago, was read an essay by Michel de Montaigne before arriving. Then once here they wrote an essay and participated in a discussion of the text in a Shimer-type classroom setting (pictured below is Don Moon facilitating one of these discussions). Other than the competition, the students and their parents were welcomed by President Lindsay (pictured left), given tours of our campus, ate lunch in the cafeteria, and scoped out the dorm rooms. Current students, including past Montaigne recipients, alumni, and staff answered questions and chatted with the prospective students and their families throughout the two days.

Now that the competition is over, they have to do what may be the hardest part...wait.  But by March 1st four very deserving students will get the good news that they are a 2010 Montaigne Scholarship Recipient.
