Thanksgiving makes me think of Shimer’s motto, “Not to be served, but to serve.” To give thanks is, after all, more than an expression: it's a way of living. If we have much to be grateful for, we also have much that is expected of us, and the highest form of gratitude, somebody once said, shows itself in deeds. This, I think, is the exhortation of the Shimer motto.
I suppose, then, we should not be surprised by the many ways Shimer alumni give back to their communities through their work, their art, and their service. This Thanksgiving, however, I’d like to pay special tribute to the Shimer staff. Our staff members perform their dedication to the College in deed every day. I'd like to acknowledge them pubicly for the way they exemplify our motto.
