Note from the President
Dear Shimerians and Friends,
I would like to join the entire
Shimer community in extending support and sympathy to those who have
been affected by the storm that struck the East Coast of the United
States and the Caribbean earlier this week.
Many of you live
in the New York area, and many more of you—like some of our students,
faculty and staff, and myself—know those who do. Here in Chicago and
around the nation, we’ve seen the photos that show the shocking extent
of the damage caused by the storm. There has been less coverage of the
damage in the Caribbean but we must remember that homes were destroyed
and lives lost there as well. I'm pleased to be able to tell you that
Steven Werlin, our faculty member who lives in Haiti where the damage
has been most extensive, is safe.
I’m certain Shimerians,
wherever they are, will join the relief efforts that have been mobilized
to help all those suffering as a result of the disaster. Even as the
water begins to recede and the stricken areas begin to recover, many
people will require our aid. I urge us to donate blood and to help in
whatever way we can by contacting www.redcross.org or other relief organizations.
Susan
