President's October Challenge
This month, I want to challenge you to become a Wikipedia editor. Wikipedia recently acknowledged its rather paltry coverage of notable women (and its number of female editors, currently a measly 9 percent). To address this issue, Wikipedia is convening a Women in Wikipedia Editathon on Friday, October 19.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19
3:15 to 4:30 pm
For this month's challenge, I'd like to extend for a month's time. If you can't make it to the Editathon on campus, you can still help change the Wikipedia statistics. This is your chance to contribute your knowledge—and Shimer’s name—to the most popular reference work on the internet.
- Look up a notable woman on Wikipedia, click on the edit button in the top right corner of each section, and contribute your knowledge.
- Does your notable woman not have an entry on Wikipedia? Start one! Sam Henderson has lent his expertise to this challenge by providing a template that shows you how it’s done.
- When you’ve made your edits, click on the Talk tab on the top left hand corner of the page. Leave a message saying that your article was part of the effort of Shimer College to improve coverage of women.
There’s also a
list of Shimer-related entries to choose from, and an extensive
resource page replete with detailed instructions and a final checklist before you hit that "Save" button. Thank you for all your help, Sam Henderson!
